COOL-SEASON GRASS TYPES (C3)
LOLIUM PERENNE (ENGLISH RYEGRASS)
- It is a fast establishing grass variety with varying dark or light green colors depending on the grass breeding method.
- It is traffic and wear-tolerant.
- Moderate shade tolerance.
- Also has high resistance to diseases
- Can quickly self-heal in the face of wear.
- It can be successfully used in parks-gardens, outdoor sports areas, and general purpose public areas.
- It is also used for overseeding in coastline areas established with warm-season grass species.
FESTUCA RUBRA
- It has fine and dense leaf texture, and maintains its color for long periods.
- Widely used for turf establishment.
- In addition to its exceptional shade tolerance, drought tolerance and disease resistance, it can tolerate ponding throughout the winter.
- By their intended use, there are three types of Festuca rubra; Festuca rubra rubra, Festuca rubra trichophylla and Festuca rubra commutata.
FESTUCA RUBRA RUBRA (RED FESCUE)
- It has strong rhizomes.
- Can rapidly cover bald spots in the turf.
- Has higher tolerance to summer heat and a greater establishment rate compared to other festucas.
- Can be used as pure stand or in mixture with other festuca species for repairing and reinforcing turf areas.
FESTUCA RUBRA COMMUTATA (CHEWING’S FESCUE)
- It is a non-rhizome plant with the highest spread rate among Festuca rubras.
- If it is planned to be used in mixtures, it should be used with another fetuca that has rhizome, or used with poa pratensis that has rhizomes for covering bald spots in the turf area.
- Quite tolerant to winter conditions, droughts and shade.
- Has a dark green color and soft texture.
- Highly tolerant to traffic, heavy wear and low mowing heights.
- Performs strongly in both well-tended and poorly-tended turfs.
FESTUCA RUBRA TRICHOPHYLLA (SLENDER RED FESCUE)
- Trichopphylla, with its short rhizomes, does quite well in covering the bald spots in the turf area.
- Its dense texture allows very close mowing.
- Has high shade tolerance.
- Thrives in arid and salty soil.
- Known to especially thrive in temperate coastal regions.
FESTUCA ARUNDINACEA (TALL FESCUE)
- It is the festuca species with the highest tolerance to heat, wear and draught.
- Its extensive and deep root system allows Festuca arundinacea to maintain water balance while other varieties cease to grow. Thus, it keeps its green color even in extremely hot and arid periods.
- Usually has deep green leaves.
- Performs well in all nurturing conditions.
- Preserves its texture in partially shady areas.
FESTUCA OVINA (HARD FESCUE)
- It is a tufty variety with short leaves.
- Majority of the original species have bluish colors.
- A highly durable plant species, Festuca ovina is extremely resistant to drought, heat and hardy winter conditions.
- Since Festuca ovina has the lowest nourishment need among Festuca species, it grows well even in dry and poor soils, and has moderate traffic tolerance.
- It is very low maintenance and performs perfectly specifically on roadsides, embankments, sandy areas etc.
- Also performs adequately in shade.
POA PRATENSIS (BLUE GRASS)
- It is a long-lived variety with perfect grass quality, and fine and dense texture.
- It has high cold tolerance and grows well in cool climate conditions.
- Its rhizomes grant traffic and heavy wear tolerance
- It has exceptional recovery capability even in severely damaged turfs.
- It forms a perfect mixture with Festuca arundinacea and lolium perenne.
- It does not have a high heat resistance.
GROSTIS TENUIS (COMMON BENT)
- It is a persistent variety with fine leaf texture that can be close mowed, and deep green colors.
- In addition to its resistance to cold and frost, it can preserve its color in hot conditions as well.
- It is commonly used in mixtures created to form turf areas with fine texture.
- It is frequently mixed with festuca rubra in areas where low-maintenance is sought.
